Thirty new students filed into the chapel narthex for a light breakfast reception to begin the first day of orientation, August 28. With coffee and pastries in hand, the introductions began as new students met and mingled with each other, staff, and faculty.
As the challenges of the past few years fade, Westminster Seminary California (WSCal) has enjoyed returning to its beloved Opening Week traditions, which include a dessert reception and formal new student introductions, lunches with faculty members between orientation lectures, and a school-wide Ice Cream Social. New students were also invited to a beach day to enjoy one of the pleasant perks of being a Southern California resident and to catch their breath between orientation and the first day of classes.
For students who entered WSCal during the 2020-21 academic year, none of this was possible, making this year’s welcome-week activities a sweet reminder of the joy of in-person education. Facilitating meaningful relationships between professors and students, students and their classmates, and students and the community is a privilege of the face-to-face education model—supported by the generosity of those who have and continue to make on-campus housing a possibility for so many WSCal students.
