Westminster Seminary California is pleased to announce its 42nd Annual Commencement, to take place at 10 a.m. on May 27, 2023, at Escondido United Reformed Church, 1864 N. Broadway, Escondido, CA 92026.

The commencement speaker this year is Rev. David W. Hall, Ph.D., Senior Pastor at Midway Presbyterian Church in Powder Springs, Georgia. Dr. Hall is also a Trustee of Westminster Seminary California. 

Speaker Bio

Dr. Hall is married to Ann; they are parents of three grown children and grandparents of eight grandchildren. He has served as the Senior Pastor of Midway Presbyterian Church (PCA) since 2003. Previously, he served as Pastor of the Covenant Presbyterian Church in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (1984-2003) and as Associate Pastor at the First Presbyterian Church in Rome, Georgia (1980-1984).

His undergraduate degree from the University of Memphis (B. A., 1975) was in philosophy. After completion of his undergraduate studies, he studied at Swiss L’Abri and then enrolled at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri, graduating in 1980. He later earned a Ph.D. in Christian Intellectual Thought from Whitefield Theological Seminary. Dr. Hall was also the Founder and a Senior Fellow of the Kuyper Institute in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He was ordained in 1980.

In addition to articles, commentaries, and Kuyper Institute Briefings, Dr. Hall has written, contributed to, and edited or co-edited numerous books. He is the author of Calvin in the Public Square: Liberal Democracies, Rights, and Civil Liberties (P&R, 2009); The Legacy of John Calvin: His Influence on the Modern World (P&R, 2008); A Heart Promptly Offered: The Revolutionary Leadership of John Calvin (Cumberland House, 2006); The Genevan Reformation and the American Founding (Lexington, 2003); The Millennium of Jesus Christ: An Exposition of The Revelation for All Ages (Calvin Institute, 1998); Savior or Servant? Putting Government in Its Place (Kuyper Institute, 1996; Covenant Foundation, 2020). Dr. Hall was a contributor to Calvin and Commerce: The Transforming Power of Calvinism in Market Economies (P&R, 2009); Evangelical Apologetics (Christian Publications, 1996); Evangelical Hermeneutics (Christian Publications, 1995); Welfare Reformed: A Compassionate Approach (P&R, 1994); Paradigms in Polity (Eerdmans, 1994); God and Caesar (Christian Publications, 1994). And Dr. Hall edited or co-edited the following: On Reforming Worship (Covenant Foundation, 2018); Twenty Messages to Consider before Voting (Covenant Foundation, 2016); A Theological Guide to Calvin's Institutes: Essays and Analysis (P&R, 2015); Preaching Like Calvin: Sermons from the 500th Anniversary Celebration (P&R, 2010); Tributes to John Calvin: A Celebration of His Quincentenary (P&R, 2010); Calvin and Culture: Exploring a Worldview (P&R, 2010); Election Day Sermons (Kuyper Institute, 1996); To Glorify and Enjoy God: A Commemoration of the 350th Anniversary of the Westminster Assembly (Banner of Truth, 1994).
