WSC invites you to attend an evening lecture presented by Dr. Adam Asher Duker, entitled “John Calvin as Frustrated Preacher: Prophecy, Psychohistory, and the Problem of Convincing Christians to Do What Pastors Think They Should.” Professor Duker holds the Abdulhadi H. Taher Chair of Comparative Religions at the American University in Cairo, where he also heads the Religious Studies program.
Duker’s expertise lies in the history of early modern theology, confessional identity, and religious violence. His dissertation (“Providence Under Pressure: Israelite Identity and Religious War in Early Modern France, 1550-1575”) focussed on the ways Reformation-era Calvinists and Roman Catholics understood themselves as biblical Israelites during times of siege warfare. His research on the pastoral function of imprecations in Calvin’s theology was awarded the Carl S. Meyer Prize by the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference. He has also been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship, the Bourse de la Confédération Suisse, and the Bourse Marandon to conduct nearly three years of original historical research in France and Switzerland.
Dr. Duker will present his lecture on Wednesday evening, January 18th, at 7pm in Classroom 4. The lecture is open to staff, students, faculty, and members of the local community. We look forward to seeing you there!
