On September 4, 2013, the incoming class for the 2013-14 academic year received their introduction to the Westminster Seminary California community during New Student Orientation, an annual fall event designed to acclimate students to academic policies and student life. The Orientation began with a devotional address by Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, and was followed by presentations from the Academic Dean, Student Association President, and the Enrollment department. The morning event concluded with a lunch for the new students, faculty, and enrollment staff.
That evening, new students, faculty, and staff reconvened, accompanied by spouses and family members, for the New Student Reception—an annual highlight of the year as students are given the opportunity to introduce themselves and share what led them to Westminster Seminary California and what they hope to do upon completing their seminary education. The forty-three new students came from over 13 U.S. states and 7 foreign countries, including Brazil, Malawi, South Korea, South Africa, Canada, Japan, and Romania. After the introductions, refreshments were served and the students and their families were able to fellowship with each other, as well as the WSC faculty and staff.
The 2013-2014 academic year was officially kicked off with an Opening Convocation on Thursday, September 5 at 10am in the WSC Chapel. After morning classes, students and staff gathered in the chapel while the faculty processed in wearing their academic regalia. The featured speaker was Dr. W. Robert Godfrey, president and professor of church history. His address was entitled “Lies and Promises” from Psalm 12. Following dismissal, students, staff and faculty fellowshipped over Peterson’s doughnuts and coffee, which were generously provided by the Westminster Student Association.
