WSC Appoints Dr. S. M. Baugh as Professor Emeritus of New Testament

Westminster Seminary California is pleased to announce the appointment of Rev. Dr. S. M. Baugh as Professor Emeritus of New Testament.

Dr. Baugh began at the seminary as a Teaching Fellow in Greek in 1983 and is retiring from full-time teaching after 38 years of faithful service to the Lord and WSC. As a pastor, scholar, and classroom teacher, Dr. Baugh has modeled a passionate concern for Christ, His Gospel, and His Church. He remains a steadfast churchman serving as a minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.

As “a man of the first century,” Dr. Baugh has dedicated his life to language instruction and teaching the New Testament. President Joel Kim remarked, “Steve excelled as a teacher and scholar, but I am most grateful for his friendship. He has been a model, encourager, and counselor to me and to many others who taught here at WSC. He once commented that his greatest joy as professor is the opportunity to be with students, and his passion for students was evident in his teaching. We are so grateful for his years of faithful teaching and mentoring.” Among his publications are two textbooks used for Greek I–III instruction at WSC: New Testament Greek for Interpreters (third edition) and A First John Reader. His other recent books include: a commentary on Ephesians in the Evangelical Exegetical Commentary series; The Majesty on High: Introduction to the Kingdom of God in the New Testament; a commentary on the Pastoral Epistles and Philemon in the award-winning Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary; study notes on Ephesians in The ESV Study Bible; and many scholarly articles for academic journals and edited books collections.

Dr. Baugh and wife, Kathy, have two grown daughters and a son who is now married and in ministry. When he is not busy working on “the Lazy B Ranch” or writing, we look forward to seeing Dr. Baugh continue to teach for WSC, preparing a new generation of specialists in the Bible.
