Julius J. Kim, Ph.D.
Dean of Students
Dear Students,
This is one of the most exciting times of year here at WSC –
the beginning of the fall semester. New students are
welcomed to campus in an official way with our orientation
day and new student reception. And of course, all students
and faculty join together to celebrate a new school year’s
beginning with our annual convocation service.
Can you tell I’m excited? I want to take a minute to give you
a preview, if you’re a prospective student. If you’re a
current student, alumnus or friend, you’ll be
well acquainted with the excitement I’m talking about.
The New Student Orientation happens the day before classes
start. All new students gather in the chapel for devotions
and then a morning of preparation for studies at WSC.
Students hear from the director of admissions, registrar,
and academic dean. As the dean of students, I participate in
this orientation process as well.
The evening before classes start, all new students and their
spouses are invited back to campus for a reception. It is a
wonderful time of fellowship and getting to know one
another. Everyone is introduced – faculty, students and
staff, and then we partake in the ultimate act of
Christian fellowship: eating.
But the convocation service on the first day of classes is my
favorite event. The student body gathers in the chapel with
excitement and anticipation. The faculty members, dressed in
their academic regalia, process in to the sound of the
opening hymn (which will be a psalm as long as Dr. Godfrey
is in charge). Then, we have the pleasure of hearing our
president bring God’s Word to us. It is a fitting opening
event to kick off a school year in which we hope and pray
that our students will learn to bring God’s Word to others.
Every time the WSC community gathers in the chapel is a
special time. But opening convocation is especially exciting
because of what it symbolizes – a new beginning. Some
students have come to seminary straight from college – it
has been their plan all along. Others have taken time off
after college, perhaps gotten married, worked a bit, had
children. Still others had been in the working world a long
time before God placed desires in their hearts to enter into
fulltime Gospel ministry and therefore attend seminary.
Many different backgrounds and stories are represented in the
WSC chapel in that convocation service. But with the kickoff
of a new year, the different backgrounds are molded into one
unique student body with various gifts and talents. The new
student events as well as opening convocation are times to
experience unity and fellowship with others who are now “in
the same boat,” if you will. And it is a joy to be among
those who are anxiously anticipating learning more about the
God they serve and how they can effectively serve in his
Kingdom.
Again, our prayer for this school year is that we, the
faculty, may faithfully instruct you, the students, to be
ministers of the gospel, or teachers, or missionaries, or
elders – faithful servants of our Lord and of his Christ.
