Julius J. Kim, Ph.D.
Dean of Students
Dear Students,
Graduation activities are always bittersweet for me. On the
one hand, I rejoice with the graduating seniors because of
all they have accomplished these last several years. For
some, they’ve come to this point in their lives after much
sacrifice and struggle. And now, they’re done and will now
move on to serving the Lord in a variety of settings. Good
for them! On the other hand, I lament the fact that in all
likelihood I will not see many of these grads again. With
the busy-ness of all that is part and parcel of life and
ministry, their years in seminary will most likely be but a
fond memory. What to do? How can these grads keep all those
good memories fresh in their minds and hearts? Let me offer
two brief suggestions: sign up and gear up.
First of all, sign up. One of the best ways to keep the
Westminster memories fresh on your hearts and minds is to
become a partner in one of our outreach programs called Into
the Word. For a modest monthly donation, you receive a
monthly CD or cassette featuring chapel messages from WSC’s
gifted faculty—often in some sort of series. For example,
the faculty recently presented in morning devotions a
stirring series of expository messages on the 1st and 2nd
epistle to the Thessalonians. If you sign up, this series
will soon be available to you. One recent grad who went back
east for his pastoral internship remarked how much he
genuinely missed hearing his professors encouraging him
through their pastoral messages week by week. As a recent
Into the Word partner he now has the benefit of hearing
these pastor/scholars bring God’s word to bear upon both his
life and his congregation. Don’t miss this great
opportunity.
Sign up today.
Secondly, you can gear up. Another way to keep all your
Westminster memories fresh is to gear up with WSC gear. Our
bookstore is now brimming with many items brandishing our
classy logo. From fleece sweatshirts to executive pens,
water bottles and t-shirts, items can be purchased from our
bookstore for yourself or for your friends and family. If
you’re proud of the education you’ve received here, and
would like to cherish that memory, is there a better way
than wearing or displaying the WSC name? Furthermore, many
of the items in the bookstore would make great father’s day
gifts, which is just around the corner.
It’s been almost 10 years since I graduated from WSC myself. I
still remember fondly the many times I was encouraged by my
professors who insightfully and incisively brought God’s
word to us each week in the morning devotions. I also still
have my slightly worn but still beloved WSC maroon
sweatshirt. Both of these have helped me remember the many
blessings I received from my alma mater, which by the way,
literally means “fostering mother.” So, if you want to keep
those wonderful memories of when you were part of the
Westminster family, just sign up and gear up.
