Campus Crusade for ??
Campus Crusade for Christ, the parachurch ministry of Bill and Vonnette Bright, has decided to drop the name of Christ from their organization. You can find the news coverage here. According to the article, 9 percent of Christians and 20 percent of non-Christians were alienated by the name, "Campus Crusade for Christ." A representative for Campus Crusade
for Christ, now called Cru, said that the name brought the Middle Ages to mind, a time when Christianity was forced upon people.
Why not drop "crusade" from the name? Militarily, the crusades might have been necessary, but theologically, they were a disaster. Why invoke the crusades in an effort to promote the gospel? At the same time, if a motivating factor behind the name change is not wanting to alienate people by the name of Christ, then there are bigger problems involved. Surely we herald the forgiveness of sins and the life-giving work of Christ that comes by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone as we proclaim the gospel. But there is no amount of sugar that can be placed on the lip of the bitter cup of salvation that can somehow sweeten the drink. There is no way to blunt the call to die to yourself, take up your cross, and follow Christ. Anything less than cruciform discipleship is cheap grace.
